Respect is Not Optional: Reflections on Workplace Harassment

Introduction:

Many of you know I dedicated much of my life to Occupational Safety until my retirement few years ago, but one my first professional steps were in the Human Resources department at UCCI. That stage taught me that the foundation of any safe environment isn’t just helmets or physical protocols, but fundamental respect between people.

Today I want to revisit that perspective to discuss a topic sometimes disguised as “courtesy,” but which we in HR know is high-risk behavior: catcalling or “unsolicited compliments” in the workplace.

The Office “Compliment”: It’s Not Flattery, It’s Harassment

Giving compliments, especially to women in public or work spaces, is no longer considered “gallantry.” It is identified as a form of verbal violence and harassment with serious personal, professional, and legal consequences. These acts create a hostile environment and limit women’s freedom.

Why it is dangerous in the workplace:

  • Hostile Environment: Unsolicited comments break professionalism. It makes women feel observed as objects rather than valued for their talent or position.
  • Hierarchy and Power: Often, these comments come from superiors or senior colleagues, generating fear of retaliation if boundaries are set.
  • Psychological Impact: Unwanted comments can cause insecurity, shame, and stress for the victims.

Professional and Legal Consequences:

CategoryConsequence
HR SanctionsFormal warnings, suspensions, or justified termination without severance.
Legal ImpactIn many jurisdictions, this behavior is classified as sexual harassment and can lead to fines or criminal penalties.

A Call to Action for the Team

The danger lies in assuming that an opinion about someone else’s body is welcome. It is not the content of the “compliment” that makes it acceptable, but the consent of the person receiving it. Without consent, it is harassment.

“Colleagues, remember that the office is a space for mutual respect. Let’s avoid comments about our coworkers’ physical appearance or clothing. What might seem like a ‘minor detail’ to some is a high-risk behavior that affects the integrity of women and the professional stability of the sender.”

Let’s work as a team, with professionalism and respect for all.
